MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina: From an undisclosed hotel somewhere around the world, Rafael Nadal found time to call his Spain teammates in the middle of the Davis Cup final against Argentina on Friday.
Nadal, who withdrew from the team this month because of knee tendinitis, wanted an update on the score, according to Spain player Feliciano Lopez.
"He was calling the people on the bench in between points to find out because they cut the TV signal in the hotel he is staying (at)," Lopez said.
Lopez defeated Juan Martin del Potro at Isla Malvinas Stadium to level the final at 1-1 after David Ferrer lost to David Nalbandian.
It was not known where Nadal was vacationing.
Spain captain Emilio Sanchez Vicario quipped that he was lucky not to have his cell phone with him, otherwise Nadal would have tried to give him instructions. Sanchez Vicario said last week it would be better for Nadal not to travel with the team to Argentina to avoid unnecessary distractions to the rest of the players.
After failing to recover from tendinitis in his right knee, Nadal was replaced by Marcel Granollers. The Davis Cup final has not had the participation of a No. 1 player since Australia's Lleyton Hewitt in 2001. Spain was seeking its third Davis Cup title, and Argentina its first.
